"Spanish Gratinated Mussels Recipe"
These gratinated mussels - Mejillones Gratinados - are first cooked shortly to open up the shells, then the shells are split and the mussels are covered with a thin layer of savoury gratin, whereafter these easy appetizers are baked off in the oven.
These mussels tapas from the oven are a beautiful variation on the theme called mussels. And you can easily make these Spanish mussels yourself! That is, if you do have an oven... (Sorry Mike! ;o)

After cooking the mussels using the basic recipe "al Vapor", we removed one of the shells of each individual mussel (don't worry, this is done in a jiffy). What's remaining is a mussel in its own natural spoon which can be used to make very tasty and easy appetizers!
Finely chopped garlic, parsley and breadcrumbs, together with the olive oil, make the gratin.
Spanish Gratinated Mussels Preparation
Preparation of this Spanish gratinated mussels recipe is really not so so hard as it may seem:
Preheat the oven to 430F (220C);
Meanwhile, cook the mussels using the basic recipe "al Vapor", allow them to cool down, and remove one of the two shells of each mussel;
Use a sharp knife to chop the garlic very fine, in this way you will get small dry particles that will blend well with the other dry ingredients of the gratin;
Make the gratin by mixing the chopped garlic, parsley and bread crumbs;
Arrange the mussels in a shallow dish and sprinkle some of the gratin over each of the mussels;
this dish is ready to go into the oven...
Sprinkle some olive oil and some of the cooking liquid over each of the mussels;
Place the dish with the mussels in the preheated oven and allow them to cook for some 8 minutes;
in the oven...
Allow the dish with the mussels to cool down a bit before you serve them (to prevent burns and other nasty trouble...);
this dish came just out of the oven...
Sprinkle some lemon juice or lime juice over the mussels;
on the table... nice and easy appetizers...
These Mejillones Gratinados will taste well when cold, but are best eaten when still hot!
